Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much land does the K.E.W.T. system need?
  2. How expensive is the K.E.W.T. system?
  3. What about maintenance?
  4. How close can the system be installed near a water course?
  5. Can the K.E.W.T. system cater for recycling?

1. How much land does the K.E.W.T. system need?

As a rule of thumb, a 25-house development would need approx. 500 sq.m. which can be part of the "green space" provided in the development. The K.E.W.T. system is totally underground and enclosed so it makes sense to use the technology to provide a green area.

2. How expensive is the K.E.W.T. system?

We have had a number of instances where the financial benefits are immense. Most times, the K.E.W.T. system can be installed for approx. half the cost of connecting to the sewer main and pumping effluent for many kilometers for treatment. We have also found instances (eg. Greenbank school) where the school was paying out inordinate amounts every year for "pump outs", which will be recouped within 5 years of installation.

3. What about maintenance?

GBG has produced a 20 year maintenance plan which details how often plants should be pruned/replaced, when solids should be pumped out etc. Basically, the K.E.W.T. system needs constant gardening and landscaping skills. The actual maintenance costs are approx. 50% of the average sewer rates. Maintenance and ongoing support are part of the GBG package.

4. How close can the system be installed near a water course?

In Queensland, every installation above 20EP (Equivalent Persons) needs a licence from the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). We need to submit a very detailed Environmental Site Based Management Plan which the EPA evaluates before issuing or rejecting the licence. Because our system is fully enclosed and does not leach into the environment, we have been allowed to install the K.E.W.T. system within a 10 metres of a water course. This varies in some other states.

5. Can the K.E.W.T. system cater for recycling?

One of the selling points with our system is that we can recycle up to 40% at present. We hope to increase that in the very near future. We normally recycle to Class B for underground sub surface watering. However, we are recycling to Class A at some sites (eg. Beachmere Sands Retirement resort) to allow residents to hose gardens etc. even in times of high level water restrictions.
